Another thing to bear in mind

    Bags packed
... it takes a lot of organising to pack your bags to cover such a wide range of events ...

Really I could do with another night in my own bed, don't know when I'm going to get a good nights sleep again. Anyone got any pro plus I can borrow?

Best chat up line in the world
I was out on Friday night in Sudbury with Katie, at the end of the evening we ended up in a nightclub. Getting on a bit we bagged a sofa in the corner and was sitting happily drinking away. Until ... this guy decided to push his way in to sit between us ... who we proceeded to ignore .... after about 2 minutes he turned to me and said "You can come on to me if you want to". After the laughter had died down he got up and went away without waiting for my answer.

    Busy
I'm supposed to be giving 2.5 days of my time to project number 1.
I've been called in to help on the costings for project number 2 (which has led to me doing most of the design as well).
Oh and I'm supposed to have project number 3 finished by the end of the week.

Ermmm ... does anyone know where I can get some more hands?

    Very sick people
So last night I went to another St Johns meeting where we had a talk from a paramedic. The first thing I learnt was that not all the blokes dressed in green that arrive with ambulances are paramedics (there actually more likely not to be). The other things I learnt were a bit more cool:

I learnt how to intubate someone
I learnt how to prepare a drip bag
I learnt how to identify and draw up different drugs

The intubating was the most interesting, there are a number of different techniques they use dependent on where the patient is and what the damage is to them.

The first technique I learnt was with a tube that has a tear shaped ring at the end that fits over the glottis. The tube is but in place and then the ring is inflated using a syringe which seals the hole stopping air being pushed into the stomach.

The second technique was to use a laryngoscope to place a tube directly into the glottis which has a cuff at the bottom which, when in place, can be inflated to seal against the walls.

The third technique, to be used when you cannot get a good view with the laryngoscope, is to use a guide tube (a very thin tube called a bougie) which you stick down the patient throat. There is only two places it can go and you know when you have hit the glottis because it has a set of rings on it and you will feel the tube bumping over them. Once that tubes in the correct place you then slide the ETT tube over the top and guide it down. Once done you remove the bougie leaving you with a good airway.

The final technique was to place the tube down the patients nose, used when someone is having an operation on their mouth. You then pick up the tube in the patients throat and place it into the glottis.

Are you scared that a first aider is learning stuff like this ...... The purpose of teaching us this stuff is so that we can assist a paramedic in performing the technique and understand what is going on and what might be needed.

    Pain
At my St Johns meeting on Wednesday I listened to a lecture on Pain and all the great things that a first aider can do to ease a patients pain like .....

    Finding a comfortable position,
    Reassure them .....

and give them a paracetamol (only if they ask for one specifically)

    ... doesn't sound like a lot

Oh .. except if there having a heart attack and then I can give them aspirin ... wo

Anyway first bit of training in March called "Critical Care" and then I get a uniform and have my first "duty" on April 10th.

    Form Filling
So I've filled in all my forms for joining St Johns including:

    1) Application Form
    2) Equal Opportunities Form
    3) Health Declaration

There was only really one question which had me a bit stumped, "Why do you want to join?" Do you think "Because I like tieing people up in bandages" is a good answer?
    11:19 am
    Bandages ... and stuff
St Johns tonight, wonder what I'll learn?

    I'm still alive
Last week I get winged at that I don't update my journal enough. I've been meaning to recently but there has been a lot of stuff going on that I've been asked not to repeat here.

Some of you will know what I'm talking about and some of you won't, apologise to the latter.

However, a new year (happy belated new year) a new start.

I've decided to look for a new job, well I actually decided over a month ago but its taken me this long to sort my CV out. A drastic change in direction is in order I think, I'm still not entirely sure to what but I'll see what's out there.

Its going to be a year of change, I've asked people around me not to let me remain idle but to push me into doing stuff so watch this space.

    Changes implemented so far:

Dyed my hair mahogany (only semi permanent so its started fading)
Joined St Johns (well haven't actually signed the forms yet but I'm going to the meeting)
Started socialising more (few nights out planned for the near future)
There's a few niggling health problems which I now have appointments to sort out.

Doesn't sound like much but we all have to start somewhere.

    Guess what I'm doing tonight
In an attempt to get out and about more often I decided I would do something worthwhile and do a bit of charity work. I came across this opportunity on the Cambridge Volunteering website:

    St John Ambulance Brigade
    --------------------------------
Volunteers are wanted to to help with CHILDRENS'/ YOUTH ACTIVITIES. Badgers (age 5-10 years) meet on Wednesday evenings in Cherry Hinton and Cadets (age 10-16) meet on Tuesday evenings in Newnham and Barnwell and on Wednesday evenings in Cherry Hinton. The groups organise First Aid and other activities for young people - proficiency badges, games, arts/crafts, life and community skills. Weekends away are also organised. Location: Cherry Hinton, Barnwell or Newnham.

I emailed them yesterday and they got back in touch straight away. So guess where I'm off to this evening?

Yawn - Is it hometime yet
As some of you will already know my little sisters off to university on Sunday. Its going to be weird to have the house all to ourselves again. I suppose when you think about it we haven't really spent much time in the house without a lodger. First it was Chris, then Graham, then Penny for a while, then the kids. Not that they are going away for long since they're planning on coming back during the holidays and the odd weekend or two.

It will give me a chance to get that room decorated which I have been saying for years but I never get round to it. Having said all that I will have to be careful [info]aberbotimue doesn't fill the room full of stuff AGAIN.

Horse riding tomorrow, I'm having a lesson at 9:15 and then we are going out on a hack at 3:30. Its our first hack so it should be interesting, [info]aberbotimue thought it might be a nice idea for us to take [info]misculanious as this will be her last "regular" lesson.

I'm wondering how often you reakon [info]misculanious will be back to visit. She says every second weekend, what do you think?

    Wedding
Should have thought to do this last week but I didn't so sorry.

Myself and [info]aberbotimue have set a date for the wedding which is the 27/08/05 (bank holiday weekend) at Kimbolton Castle. Its a little way off (15 months) but there is lots that need organising like photographers, outfits etc.

Keep you posted on any other progress made.

Joke: The bunny and the snake
Once upon a time, allegedly, in a nice little forest, there lived an orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake. By surprising coincidence both were blind from birth.

One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake and fell down.

This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit.

"Oh, my," said the bunny, "I'm terribly sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I've been blind since birth, so, I can't see where I'm going. In fact, since I'm also an orphan, I don't even know what I am."

"It's quite okay," replied the snake. "Actually, my story is much the same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my mother. Tell you what, maybe I could kinda slither over you, and figure out what you are, so at least you'll have that going for you."

"Oh, that would be wonderful." replied the bunny.

So the snake slithered all over the bunny, and said, "Well, you're covered with soft fur; you have really long ears; your nose twitches, and you have a soft cottony tail. I'd say that you must be a bunny."

"Oh, thank you! Thank you," cried the bunny in obvious excitement.

The bunny suggested to the snake, "Maybe I could feel you with my paw, and help you the same way you've helped me."

So the bunny felt the snake all over, and remarked, "Well, you're scaly and smooth, and you have a forked tongue, no backbone and no balls.

I'd say you must be either a consultant, a computer programmer, or possibly someone in senior management."

I thought some of you would appreciate that.
